So if you buy a cheap banner sign or a banner sign without proper finishes, you are risking tearing and failure of the material. To make a banner tear proof the lip must be folded and sewn leaving no exposed raw edge.

The rope, should run the full width of the horizontal. This will spread the wind loading along the sign reducing any pressure point. The eyelets (grommets) should be punched evenly without over crimping the vinyl or canvas. Each eyelet seals over the top ring without cutting or creating a weak point. The corners and mid points should also have an underneath extra section of vinyl or canvas as reinforcement. Finally, the stitching should lock down all components. The rope is lock stitched, the eyelet surround is angle stitched and the seam lip is sewn over the rope and back through the lip.

When buying a banner, please take care that these minimum standards are achieved so your sign will not tear and cause problems.
